Diagnosis

You will start to hear a humming sound coming from one corner of the vehicle. The sound will probably change with wheel speed.

  • Fronts - When you turn the wheel the humming will get worse. Example, if the drivers side front is bad, turning the wheel to the right while in motion will worsen the humming. If it is your fronts get it changed ASAP! You can easily ruin your front axle or axle tone ring, and then your abs sensor. You can't buy the tone ring by itself, so you'll need a new axle. Parts add up fast here.
  • Rears - You'll probably not notice a difference going around corners, but if you have a friend ride in the back and listen for what side the humming is coming from you can figure it out.

When the car is not moving, jack up the suspect wheel. Grab the wheel at 9 and 3 and wiggle back and forth. If there is alot of play, your bearing is most likely shot. Do the same at 12 and 6 with the suspect wheel. Check versus a known good wheel to gauge what is bad and what is not.
