Rear Spherical Bearings. Here's what they look like, and what they should do (video)...
Here is what the rear spherical bearing [correct term is the Rose joint] (the lower one, even!) should do if it is GOOD (same hardware exists on the upper arm as well, so four total per rear suspension)... This is on the outboard end of the control arms (near the rims).

If you have a Rose Joint that does not move like this, is frozen in place, etc., it could easily lead to catastrophic failure!
A seized Rose Joint puts too much force on the control arms. This leads to cracking/failure of the control arm, but the issue is really with the Rose Joint. Note in later model years (2004+ ?) the Rose Joint was replaced with a rubber bush. The bush won't seize, but it has more play than the Rose Joint.
