1992-1997 Audi S4/S6

In 1992, Audi introduced the high performance model of their midsized C4 chassis Audi 100. This car was to be named the S4, and was the first Audi to have the S4 name. The S4 was powered by the latest evolution of Audi's venerable turbocharged inline-5 engine family. Displacing 2226cc, given a distributorless Motronic brain, and a KKK-24 turbo, this engine known as the AAN had a power output of 227hp @ 5500 RPM and 258ft-lbs. @ 1950RPM. In the time since then, the 1992-94 S4 has earned it's place in history, now being known as the Original S4 or urS4 for short.

In 1995, Audi embarked on a mid-life update of the S4. This update concided with a change in the Audi model line nomenclature, a naming system which is in use to this day. The line of compact cars previously known as the 80/90 were now simply known as the A4. Similarly, the midsized 100/S4 was changed to the A6 for the standard sedan and S6 for the high performance model. The updated A6/S6 line of cars continued to be built until 1997 when it was replaced by the completely new C5 A6 in 1998. For the American market however, the S6 was only offered for one short year in 1995.

The changes in the 1995 S6 model were externally subtle, but significant in detail. Certain features were running changes and only appeared in later production versions now known as the "95.5". Major changes included:


Hood with a wider, trapezoid grille with the shape of the headlight glass cosmetically changed to match. The headlights remained functionally identical to the older S4.

Revised front turn signal indicators.

Revised instrument cluster with electronic odometer, replacing the mechanical odometer of the S4.

A claimed 10% stiffer chassis than the previous C4 100/S4.

Single-wide-DIN Delta CC cassette stereo deck with 6 disc in-trunk CD Changer.

New design 3 spoke "Sport" steering wheel with airbag.

Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) replacing the previous manual Differential Lock button.
